9 Blog Rankings and How to Manipulate-Part Two
If you're new here, you may want to browse my articles and if you like them please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
This is the part 2 of the series, where we look into blog rankings and how to manipulate them. so far we have looked at BlogCatalog, Alexa, Technorati Favorites and our traffic statistics and we found that generally these are easy to manipulate, but todays list are much harder and need more work.
5 - Technorati Authority
This is a more worthy factor for bloggers than the technorati favorites and it reflects a better picture of the authority of the blog. It is calculated using the amount of incoming links or “blog reactions”, links from blogs with higher authority will help improve your authority.
Can we manipulate it?
This one slightly harder to manipulate but you could start an blog contest, submit to a blog carnival, join group writing projects, viral link. These will all help in some form.
I found that doing a contest has gained me a huge jump in my authority as well as my blog reactions. But I found that old fashioned quality posts will help as more people will generally link to your posts and hence increase your authority.
4 - Social Media (Stumbles, Sphinn, Diggs etc)
Slightly different to the other indicators as these are at article level and not for the whole blog, but as a short turn traffic booster they are one of the best.
Many bloggers live and die by social media sites, and I can understand why, they can drive huge traffic to your site. Whether you give the thumbs up or digg a site they all work to give you new traffic.
I do normally question whether its always quality traffic but it’s traffic anyhow.
Can we manipulate it?
Can be simply or difficult depending on the site and volume of traffic you want. There are many groups or sites that arrange digg or stumble exchanges, so being in with these types of groups will certainly assist you to achieve better volume of traffic. Quality of your article will play a certain amount, but being with the exchange groups will out weigh this…
3 - Google Search Rank for a Keyword
Not too sure if this should be added but I leave it in anyhow, reaching the first page on Google will certainly help to give you more traffic.
Can we manipulate it?
Not easily to manipulate, it’s a long term project that requires a lot of careful thought and work, working with search engine optimization and particularly keyword rich content, title, picture tags etc all play a very important part in increasing your rank with Google search.
2 - Google Page Rank
Google page rank is probably the most common and looked at form of authority right now, with all bloggers chasing the magically numbers. There been a lot of talk and discussions on whether Google has changed its formula and even if it’s still worth bloggers still using it.
Can we manipulate it?
Not easily done, you need to get high quality links ( high PageRank) from other sites within your niche, but with Google banning certain sites and penalizing websites too, it’s quite hard to know where we stand.
1 - RSS Subscribers on Feedburner
This I believe is the number one indicator for authority, when I look at a new website its one of the first things I will look for is the feedburner widget, currently the likes of Problogger (36,000), Shoemoney( 13,000) and John Chow(14,000) have huge readership and this indicates they have a following and write quality content. Generally RSS readership is difficult to fake and manipulate.
Can we manipulate it?
Not easily at all, the only way I can think of right now is submitting to RSS feed directories which will increase your numbers slightly.
Conclusion
Which can be trusted?
In conclusion I have listed 9 ranking systems, but there many more. I feel that RSS feeds, Technorati authority and PageRank are probably the most difficult to manipulate and can represent your blogs authority the best. But what ever the system you use to judge a site always try and use several systems to get a better idea, but remember the quality of content should be the final judgment as not all bloggers go chasing after the magically ranking and i have found many a site who’s lowly ranked but write quality content.
Waht other ranking tools can we use to judge a sites authority?

Joining group writing projects was very helpful for me, as I gained not only a good bunch of links to my site, but also I got in touch with many other bloggers, which allowed us to help each other in other occasions. This determined me to organize a group project on my blog. It is still ongoing, so I cannot publish any results yet, but it will be interesting to see what my statistics will look after it ends.
I found that you have really give a good detailed description of all the techniques of blog rankings. Good work and all the best!
I think manipulation of these rankings is just a useless task. Atleast PR,Technorati, but RSS subscriber count is a real measure of quality. You could make people give you backlinks, or you could even buy links for higher PR .. But making someone read your content is just about impossible. And the feeling that 130 readers are tuned in to your views must really push you on .. Can’t imagine the feelings of the likes of Darren, Copyblogger etc. 35,000 readers each day is just about awesome ..
I am still looking a way to top tech. authority.
