What, Why, When, Where and How of Comments

If you're new here, you may want to browse my articles and if you like them please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Comments are probably the best part about blogging and at times the most rewarding, you find me someone who doesn’t like to hear “that’s an inspiring article” or “you really helped me”. We use comments everyday to discuss what the author has written, whether we agree, disagree or have an opinion comments will always be good tool on a blog.

What should I say in my comment?

Anything you like to say basically, but relate to the author’s article.

Here’s a few do’s and dont’s for comments:

  1. “Great article”, “nice site” “I agree” etc, many bloggers don’t like seeing one lines. Even you mean it’s a great article try saying “its great article because….”
  2. Try avoid leaving links within comments as most people don’t agree with this, unless you are requested to by author, e.g. Definitive list of stumbleupon articles.
  3. Little tip: when filling out the form for the website, try leaving your popular article URL or a related article instead of going directly to your home page.

Why should I comment?

Put in simple terms it’s advertising for your blog in an indirect way. As comments are read by the readers and author it becomes a good way of letting people know you exist.

It becomes an excellent way to get readers for the author’s blog and onto yours. I have written many comments and within hours seen the author and many new readers viewing my site, if your site then gives a good impression they will return and become your regular reader and maybe even end up your RSS subscribers.

You will need to work out an strategy for commenting to maximize your effort

When should I comment?

When you find a site that has good content that relates to your site you will find it very easy to write regular comments but you should never comment for sake of commenting as it will clearly be seen.

Also try commenting early in the articles lifetime to get maximum exposure to all readers and if you have different views to others can always spice up the comment section and get attention.

Where should I comment?

If you write within a niche then comment within your topic, but if you’re a general blogger who just rants and raves on what he likes then try comment on article that relate to your articles on your home page so when viewers come to your blog they can still relate.

How do I comment?

Look around the title of the post or even at the bottom of the post, here you should find the words, Comments or maybe leave a comment, click there and you be lead to a single form which will require your name, email address and website and of course your comment.

When finished click the “submit” button and wait for the author to either auto or manually approve your comment. Job Done!

In my closing statement, commenting will pay dividend in the long term just look at the likes of caroline-middlebrook who spent 54.5 hours in a month on reading and commenting in the hope to draw attention and bring these readers back to her blog. It’s not an instant success to bring traffic to your site compared to stumbleupon but you will find over time you will gain quality readers and increase your own comments count at the same time but at same time never abuse the comments function on a site

Great article! Err…..I’m suppose to say more, right?

One don’ts of commenting I would like to add is NOT to swear to have a slanging match with the author using comment section.

If one can’t rein in his/her emotions in public, it speaks volume about his/her character.

Yep .. You are so very true .. Quality commenting is a skill really .. That i’ve realised both on forums and blogs .. With forums though one has a tougher time with bad quality comments or misleading comments .. But with blogs commenting is less demanding i feel ..

Also i guess i should’ve spend the last 3 hours on this site commenting on all the posts i could .. well i;m doing this just for today, but to sustain for close to 60 hours in a month is 2 hours in a day on a average .. Can’t even dream of such commenting ..

Anyways i’m guessing this could be the 700#comment .. If it were then i would be really lucky .. And to top it all if i were to win the blog post competition too, it sure would rock ..

Keeping my fingers crossed and waiting …

      Cheers ..

I should say i had a pretty nice time through tonight, phew !! now i should retire for sure ..

So glad I found this post on Sphinn - I’ve been procrastinating about leaving comments on blogs for a very long time.

I know how beneficial it can be for everyone involved (the blog receiving the comment, the author of the post being commented on, the readers of that blog… me and my own site etc. etc.)

But despite knowing all this - I still struggle to add feedback on the many blogs I read each day.

Thanks to your post I’m going to make a concerted effort to change this!
